Russian Kale
Kale has such brilliant color this time of year. Red Kale is a long-used green - and varieties have been of nutritious use to humans for a couple thousand years. It is a sort of wild cabbage, in the Brassica family, and was familiar to the Romans, throughout Europe and Asia in the middle ages, and now found on almost every farmers' market stand. Red Kale was brought through Canada to the United States by Russian Traders in the late 1700's. Plant (or their genes) make amazing journeys, and have quite interesting stories to tell. I like feeling like we are a very small part of the story as we grow, sell and enjoy this vegetable.
